Jam labels and communication trends
Low in sugar and rich in fruit: for jams and preserves, these are the most appealing aspects, driving consumer purchases. On the label of a jam, such qualities deserve a prominent position as they hold strong persuasive power. The design of a jam label, in fact, often follows a logic where these elements are in the foreground: the product and company name, the image of the fruit, the percentage of fruit, and any information related to added sugars. All of these elements gain even more significance when enhanced with the right finish. For example, during the printing process, it is possible to highlight the product name using screen printing embossing or hot stamping, two exclusive finishes for jam and preserve labels. It is also possible to enhance the fruit percentage or any other detail in the graphic composition. The key aspect to consider when configuring the printing of jam labels is that the enhancements will elevate and enrich the elements involved. It is therefore important to understand which information will most attract people who are seeing your jam label for the first time and to highlight them with the most suitable processing.
Jam or preserve label?
Jams and preserves are often considered the same product. However, there is a difference. Jam consists of sugars and citrus fruits in a specific percentage, while preserves contain sugars and other types of fruit in a higher percentage compared to the citrus fruits in jams. This distinction does not impact the creation of adhesive labels. Labels for preserves and jams can be customised independently as the communication line is dictated by the brand. This aspect may be relevant for a company producing both jams and preserves only in terms of graphic style and the configuration of multiple labels. For example, the company could choose one line of adhesive labels for all jams and another for all preserves. It is worth noting that when you need to print labels that differ only in design – as might be the case for multiple lines of the same product – graphic variations can be used. This is a commonly chosen option for jam labels as it allows the creation of many versions of the same label with a single configuration and, consequently, a single order.
Configuring jam labels based on the jar
The container of choice for jams and preserves is the glass jar. In the customisation of jam labels, it is therefore worth considering best practices for configuring bottle labels. It is certainly useful to pay attention to the type of container the adhesive label will be applied to, its surface, and shape, as these aspects influence various choices in the customisation of the print. However, what will more significantly impact the graphic design of the jam label is the content rather than the container. Since these are food products whose main ingredient is fruit, from an aesthetic point of view, one can work well by evoking the quality and origin of the raw material, its freshness, and its goodness. If these aspects are well highlighted, they could easily trigger sensations associated with tasting the product. For a high-profile jam or preserve in terms of taste, a winning idea could also be to use a partially transparent label, opting for the use of transparent printing material or removing internal elements.
Jam labels that showcase the product
A preserve with a wonderful texture and natural colours, clearly demonstrating the quality of the product, deserves to have space on the label. The choice to show the content through transparent labels is also popular among jam producers. It is particularly interesting to consider how to do this, not only with a printing substrate like transparent polypropylene but also through a special enhancement in our label configurator. This is called the “internal element removal”, which allows the removal of one or more elements from the jam label, replaced with empty space. In these gaps, the part of the label will be missing, leaving the glass jar and the jam as the background. Besides showcasing the product, this solution is also interesting for creating playful effects, resulting in a highly exclusive jam label, definitely different from the more common ones.
FAQ
Labels for Jams: Frequently Asked Questions
-
How to write labels for jams?
To correctly write the content for jam labels, it is important to consider the information required by the consumer, starting with the mandatory details. This aspect applies to both small producers and companies distributing jams on a large scale. First and foremost, reference should be made to the regulations, starting with food standards and then focusing on the specific product in question.
When writing your adhesive labels for jams, you should definitely include:
- Product name along with the type of fruit, for example, "forest fruit jam".
- List of ingredients, primarily specifying the fruit. Allergens should also be highlighted if present.
- Net quantity of product, in grams or kilograms.
- Expiration date or minimum shelf life.
- Batch number, essential for product traceability.
- Producer information.
- Storage instructions, such as: "Keep refrigerated after opening".
- Nutritional values, expressed per 100 grams of product.
- Statements regarding fruit and sugar content.
Additionally, all optional elements that, while not mandatory, can make your jam label more attractive and distinctive should not be overlooked. These include:
- Ingredient origin, if the fruit comes from a particular geographical area.
- Values or production philosophy with a brief mention that can create an emotional connection with consumers.
- Certifications or symbols.
- Suggestions for consumption or pairing.
As with all food products, it is also essential that the information is clear and legible. Therefore, pay attention to the fonts chosen and their sizes, as well as how the content will be arranged on your jam adhesive label.
-
How to make jam labels?
To create a label that presents your jam professionally, you must design it with both informative and communicative purposes in mind. The label must clarify any doubts the consumer may have, but also convey the quality of the jam and make it appealing. With this in mind, you can create jam labels starting from the design, from the idea to the graphic production. Before graphically creating your labels, consider:
- size and format,
- content and layout,
- colours and printing material,
- any finishes.
Many aspects of file creation overlap with those related to printing. To produce successful jam labels, you need to think holistically with a complete overview. For example, the elements related to the printing of your labels must be included in the graphic file; if there is an enhancement like removing an internal element, this must be created within the label design. To correctly create your jam labels, you can consult our guide on file creation.
The document should be uploaded to the configurator during the customisation of the print. At this stage, you will only need to specify all the parameters for your jam labels, which you should generally already have clear:
- format,
- size,
- printing material,
- application type,
- finishes,
- quantity.
At the end, you will immediately see the cost estimate, which will update each time you make changes to your configuration.
-
Which printing materials to use for jam labels?
The right printing material guarantees quality, durability, and aesthetics for your jams. Unlike low-quality adhesive papers, professional labels require materials capable of withstanding different environmental conditions and presenting the product in an elegant and distinctive manner.
Here are some materials suitable for printing jam labels:
- Coated paper, a common choice for jam labels. It can have a glossy or matte finish and has a smooth surface that gives the label a professional and elegant appearance. It is also an excellent solution if you need an economical material.
- Polypropylenes, a widely used material in the food sector due to its physical characteristics. It is waterproof, resistant to temperature changes, and oil stains.
- Natural and premium papers, more exclusive and elegant, often characterised by textured surfaces. These can make a significant difference in terms of prestige and are suitable for high-quality jams with a mid-to-high price range.
- Eco-friendly papers, ideal for artisanal or organic jams, where the authentic and genuine nature of the product should stand out. These are sustainable papers with a unique appearance, capable of fully enhancing the natural quality of the jam.
Remember that for jam labels, as with all others, the choice of the right material is not only linked to aesthetics and budget requirements but also to the product's usage conditions, which can affect the label's durability and resistance.
